The Seaflex-moored Alqueva Floating Solar Farm’s received the European Sustainable Energy Award 2023 in the Innovation category during this year’s European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW). This innovative 5 MW project in central Portugal unites solar energy with a pre-existing hydropower reservoir, showcasing a pioneering approach to renewable energy.
12,000 floating solar panels, spread across 4 hectares, produce energy that accounts for 30% of the local households’ consumption. By employing the same connection as a 20-year-old hydropower plant and incorporating battery storage, the Alqueva Floating Solar Farm maximizes efficiency, stability, and environmental stewardship.
European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson’s praise, along with the project’s recognition at the European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW), accentuates the broader implications of this achievement. This blend of renewable energy technologies underscores the European Union’s dedication to a cleaner energy future.
The Alqueva Floating Solar Farm symbolizes a new direction in Europe’s commitment to sustainable energy, making strides toward minimizing carbon emissions and mitigating climate change effects. We are honored to be part of the team behind this project and congratulate other winners for their notable contributions to the world of green energy!
